The ideal line: what a racing line actually is, and why it's not the fastest one

Understanding the racing line — wide entry, apex, wide exit — is the second big technical leap after braking.

After braking, the racing line is the second big technical leap on track. Many riders confuse "going fast" with "following the line they see in MotoGP", without understanding why that line works and when it's worth adapting.

Wide entry, apex, wide exit

The classic racing line aims to maximize the corner's radius: you enter from the widest possible point of the track, touch the apex (the innermost point of the corner) at the right moment, and exit opening out toward the edge. A wider radius allows you to carry more speed without exceeding the tire's grip limit.

The apex isn't always in the same place

In corners leading onto a long straight, the apex is delayed (a late apex) so you exit with the bike more upright and can open the throttle sooner. In fast, constant-radius corners, on the other hand, the apex tends to come earlier. There's no single correct line for every corner.

Looking far ahead: the habit nobody trains

Your line depends directly on where you're looking. Looking at the apex instead of the ground right in front of the wheel lets you anticipate the corner and adjust your line much more smoothly. It's a simple habit that completely changes how the track feels.

Adapt the line to your group and your bike

A MotoGP rider's line on slick tyres isn't necessarily the safest one for a beginner group on street tyres. Always prioritize the line that lets you see ahead and correct if something goes wrong.

Put the line into practice

A riding course with an instructor on track is the fastest way to correct your line with immediate feedback. Also check the available track days to ride on your own.
